How We Test Hearing

At Florida Medical Clinic, we begin every journey back to healthy hearing with a complete hearing evaluation. Our audiologists begin these assessments with a review of your medical history and lifestyle and take the time to get to know the specifics about your hearing concerns. After this review, the audiologist then examines your ear, inside and out, to check for any physical obstructions such as impacted cerumen (earwax) or debris.

The next part of the hearing evaluation is to accurately assess your current hearing capacity. Many methods have been developed to assess hearing ability, but the most common and the most reliable test has been the pure tone audiogram. For this test, earphones will be placed on your ears and you will be asked to listen for a series of beeping tones that sound like notes on a piano. You will be asked to respond when you hear these sounds by raising your hand or pushing a button. The audiologist will determine the softest volume that you can hear for a variety of tones from very low to very high pitches, and the results will be recorded on a graph called an audiogram.
